A bowl of cooked sweet peas garnished with fresh mint leaves and a pat of melted butter

How to Make the Best Sweet Peas Recipe with Herbs

This Sweet Peas with Herbs recipe is a bright and refreshing side dish bursting with garden-fresh flavor. Tender sweet peas are gently cooked and tossed with a medley of fragrant herbs, a touch of butter, and a squeeze of lemon. It’s the perfect accompaniment to grilled meats, fish, or vegetarian mains—ready in just 15 minutes!

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sweet peas (fresh or frozen)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  • If using frozen peas, rinse under cool water to separate, then drain.

  • In a medium saucepan, bring 1/2 cup of water to a simmer over medium heat.

  • Add the peas and cook for 3–5 minutes until tender and bright green.

  • Drain any excess water, then return peas to the pan.

  • Add olive oil, butter, salt, and pepper. Stir until butter is melted and peas are evenly coated.

  • Gently mix in the parsley, mint, dill (if using), and lemon zest.

  • Add a splash of lemon juice for extra brightness, if desired.

  • Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • This dish is fantastic served warm, but it’s also delicious chilled as a light pea salad.

  • Try adding crumbled feta or goat cheese for a creamy, tangy twist.

  • Fresh herbs work best, but dried can be used in a pinch—use about 1/3 of the fresh amount.
